If you are a man who is suffering from enlarged breasts, you are not alone.
regularly see male patients who have gynecomastia, or a swelling of breast tissue. This condition is usually not threatening,
but some men and boys suffer mild breast pain, and many feel embarrassed
by their physical appearance. Read on for answers to some frequently asked
questions about gynecomastia—and to find out how Dr Jennifer Geoghegan can help.
What Causes Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia occurs when men have
estrogen levels that are too high or testosterone levels that are too low. Enlarged breasts
happen to a wide range of men. In fact, over half of male babies are born
with enlarged breasts that simply dissipate within two or three weeks
of birth. Gynecomastia can also occur during puberty due to hormone changes,
or between the ages of 50 and 80. Plastic surgeons report that at least
one in four older men are affected. Older men generally experience the
condition as a side effect of medication.
What Are Common Symptoms?
The most obvious symptom of gynecomastia is enlarged or swollen breast
gland tissue. Men may experience breast tenderness or mild pain. Medical
attention should generally be sought if the condition does not improve
on its own or worsens, or if a patient is simply unhappy with his chest’s
cosmetic appearance. If there is noticeable swelling, moderate or severe
pain or tenderness, or nipple discharge, men should visit their physician
What Treatments Are Available?
Doctors generally prescribe medication to treat enlarged breasts. But
for men who continue to struggle with breast enlargement, plastic surgery
may be the best option. Dr Geoghegan will recommend either liposuction
or a mastectomy. Liposuction removes breast fat, but not the breast gland
tissue itself. Mastectomy, or breast reduction or removal, removes the
tissue entirely and can also remove skin if it is also loose or saggy.
This kind of surgery is now performed via very small incisions, which
translates into less recovery time.
