A breast reduction is a reconstructive surgery procedure in which excess breast fat, skin, and glandular tissue are removed in order to create a smaller bust line. Despite the popularity of breast enhancement procedures through the use of breast implants, many women with large breasts are turning to breast reduction surgery from their plastic surgeons. Here are a few signs that you could benefit from a breast reduction:
1. You Are Unhappy With the Size of Your Breasts
Breast reduction surgery may be right for you if you are unhappy with the size of your breasts. If large breasts are interfering with your inability to wear certain types of clothes, participate in physical activities, sleep on your stomach, or just feel positive about yourself, it may be time to consider a breast reduction.
2. You Are Experiencing Health Complications
Women with large breasts tend to experience a number of unpleasant health complications, including back and neck pain, nerve conditions, and skin irritations or rashes. Large breasts can also cause bra strap indentations along the shoulders and scar-like streaks along the breasts.
3. You Have Stretched Skin
Another sign that you could benefit from a breast reduction is having stretched skin along your breasts that causes your breasts to hang lower than normal. A breast reduction may also be right for you if you are suffering from enlarged areolas.
The best way to determine if a breast reduction is right for you is to consult with your plastic surgeon. Let Dr. Jennifer Geoghegan with Oasis Plastic Surgery in Scottsdale help educate you on the best procedure options for your needs. Liposuction is a minimally invasive plastic surgery procedure designed to remove localized deposits of fat that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. A body contouring procedure such as liposuction may be right for you if you are suffering from stubborn fat deposits along your midsection, abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, calves, or cheeks. While Dr. Jennifer Geoghegan can determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction, it is important to educate yourself on what you can expect from the procedure:
·Initial Consultation
You will meet with Dr. Geoghegan ahead of time to complete a patient medical history questionnaire and undergo a physical examination. This consultation not only identifies your eligibility for the procedure, but also allows you to ask questions about the procedural steps, recovery period, and anticipated results.
·Procedural Steps
After administering intravenous or general anesthesia, Dr. Geoghegan will create a small incision and insert a thin cannula or hollow tube into the affected areas. Dr. Geoghegan will then move the cannula using controlled back and forth motions in order to dislodge and remove excess fat deposits using a suction device. The incisions are then sealed using removable or dissolvable sutures.
·Following the Procedure
All patients will remain in the recovery area for at least one hour before returning home; however, it is important to have a family member or friend accompany you to the procedure, as you will not be able to drive. Dr. Geoghegan will wrap your incisions in an elastic compression bandage to help reduce swelling and ensure that your skin adjusts to the removal of fat.
·Recovery Period
Dr. Geoghegan will provide you with in-depth instructions regarding the recovery period. However, most women find that they are able to return to work within two days to a week of the procedure, avoid strenuous activity for 2-3 weeks.

Having a mastectomy no longer means that you have to face life without your breasts. Modern breast reconstructive surgery techniques allow your plastic surgeon to rebuild your breasts and hopefully rebuild your confidence in the process. If you’re facing a mastectomy and considering breast reconstruction, here is what you need to know:
·Who Is a Good Breast Reconstruction Candidate?
Although mastectomies are usually performed due to a cancer diagnosis, most women are healthy enough after their mastectomies to have reconstructive surgery. Dr. Geoghegan will make sure that you’re healthy enough to heal properly after the procedure and will make sure you have realistic expectations about the surgery. If you’re a smoker, you should quit before your procedure to allow proper healing.
·How Is the Surgery Performed?
Plastic surgeons use a number of different techniques for breast reconstruction. The best one for you will depend on your general health and what you want your new breasts to look like. Some breast reconstructions involve an implant, while other procedures involve taking tissue from another part of your body and using it to build a breast. Dr. Geoghegan will work with you to choose the best technique for you.
·What Is the Recovery Time?
The recovery period varies depending on the type of breast reconstruction you’ve had. You will be up and moving the day of your surgery to encourage circulation, but you will probably be in the hospital overnight. Most women return to work within one to four weeks after surgery. You will need to avoid strenuous activity for up to six weeks.
At Oasis Plastic Surgery, we understand how much breast reconstruction can improve a woman’s life after a mastectomy. Dr. Geoghegan and our entire staff are here to help you through the whole process, so you get the results you want. Call us today at (480) 619-5418 to schedule an appointment and get answers to your breast reconstruction questions.
