In this video, the American Society for Plastic Surgeons takes a closer look at breast augmentation surgery and the different procedure methods involved. Breast augmentation surgery is a great way to increase the size of your bust line and improve your overall body symmetry. If you are interested in undergoing a breast enhancement, there are a number of questions you’ll want to ask your plastic surgeon during the initial consultation.
Am I a Good Candidate?
The first question you should pose to your surgeon is whether breast augmentation is right for your needs. Generally speaking, women who are in good health but unhappy with the size of their breasts are good candidates for the procedure. A breast augmentation may also be right for you if one of your breasts is larger than the other, or you have lost breast volume following pregnancy or weight loss.
Which Type of Anesthesia Will Be Used?
It is important to tell your surgeon if you have had any negative reactions to anesthesia in the past, as this will give your surgeon a better idea of which type of sedation method to use during the procedure. Most breast augmentation procedures are performed under general anesthesia.
Which Implant Is Right for You?
Saline implants consist of a silicone outer shell with a sterile salt water solution, and silicone implants involve the same outer shell, but are filled with a cohesive silicone gel. A good way to choose between these types is to ask your surgeon if you can feel each sample during your initial consultation.
Which Incision Method Will Be Used?
You should find out which incision method your surgeon plans to use during the procedure. The three most common incision methods include the inframammary incision, made beneath the breast; the transaxillary incision, made inside the armpit; and the periareolar incision, made around the areola.

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure in which excess skin and fat are removed from the midsection in order to create firmer body contours. In many cases, tummy tuck procedures can also be performed to repair abdominal muscles that have become weakened or separated.
To be considered a good candidate for a tummy tuck, it is important that you are in good health and have realistic expectations regarding the final results. It is also crucial that you are not suffering from certain medical conditions, including diabetes, kidney disease, or any type of bleeding disorder that may impair healing. Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck are within 30 percent of their ideal weight, and are bothered by the presence of excess abdominal fat and loose skin.

Body contouring procedures such as liposuction and tummy tucks are among the most common plastic surgery procedures performed today. However, these two procedures are designed to achieve different results. Continue reading to get a better idea of the fundamental differences between liposuction surgery and tummy tucks.
Liposuction is a minimally invasive cosmetic surgery procedure that’s designed to remove fat deposits of the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, chest, back, calves, ankles, and even the face. Tummy tuck procedures, on the other hand, are designed to remove excessive amounts of fat and skin located along the midsection.
As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, candidates for either procedure should be non-smokers who are in good general health and have realistic expectations regarding the results. Liposuction is not an alternative to weight loss; ideal candidates should be near their goal weight, with good muscle tone and firm skin elasticity. Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck may include individuals with excess fat and sagging skin along the midsection following pregnancy or major weight loss.
During the liposuction procedure, Dr. Jennifer Geoghegan will make a small incision through which she can insert a thin hollow tube, or cannula. This tube is then used to dislodge and remove fat cells. Tummy tuck surgery involves a larger incision made horizontally between the hip bones. Through this larger incision, Dr. Geoghegan will remove excess skin, fat, and repair weakened or separated abdominal muscles.
Individuals who undergo liposuction are typically able to return to work within one week, and may resume strenuous exercise two to three weeks following surgery. Those who undergo a tummy tuck can typically return to work one to two weeks after the procedure, and resume strenuous activity four to six weeks after surgery.
The best way to determine which of these body contouring procedures is right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Geoghegan. Give Oasis Plastic Surgery a call at (480) 264-6428 for more information.
